The weird world of eSports terminology

As with all sports, eSports has its own ‘language’. While it may confuse you at first, the more you start to understand the lingo, the more you will start to appreciate the challenges and pressures players face.

While most of you will be familiar with terms such as ‘AFK’, ‘FPS’, and ‘DQ’, what are some of the more obscure, interesting terms used in the heat of the battle?

We have compiled a list of five of our favourite terms, mainly because they are a little out there.

‘Juke’

This term is used for the tactical movement of tricking your opponent into attacking or moving away from you. ‘Juke’ is also used when you lure your opponent into an attack or move which is unsuccessful for them.

‘Kiting’

This has nothing to do with a lazy Sunday afternoon at the park. This has everything to do with staying alive. ‘Kiting’ is the act of getting away from an opponent who is out to get you, but being at just the right distance to ensure you are safe. Remember the movie ‘Borat’? Well, as he said: “You’ll never get this!”.

‘Ganking’

We have all done that silly little trick where you tap someone on the shoulder and then move in the opposite direction to pretend that nobody was there in the first place. Well, ‘Ganking’ is kind of like that, only instead of tapping your unsuspecting opponent on the shoulder, you take them out with a kill. Always be aware of what’s behind you, people!

‘Dive’

You can be as tactical as you want, but sometimes you just need to take a ‘Dive’. A ‘Dive’ is when a player moves into a very unsafe area in a gung-ho fashion. There is little regard for one’s life here, but rather the goal of picking up a kill or a score. High risk, high reward.

‘Snowball’

This term is used for when a player or team gains so much power that the opposition has no answer to the juggernaut approaching them.
